The Intensity Downs the Nitro, 21-0!
New England traveled west to Schenectday, NY for an evening contest with the Northeastern Nitro last night, beating the home team 21-0 in front of numerous Intensity fans that also made the trek! Lisa Vincent caught a Rebecca Lopez pass for the game's first score then ran one in (both in the opening frame). Rookie RB Heather Eagleson scored her 2nd TD run in as many games during the second quarter, while the D performed in quintessential "bend-but-don't-break" fashion. They needed to because the physical Nitro squad did not go quietly into the night--in fact, Nitro gumption and Intensity miscues conspired to keep the 2nd half a scoreless one.

Intensity Defeats Freedom 41-14!
The New England Intensity downed long-time rival New Hampshire Freedom for the 9th consecutive time, winning big, 41-14, in Manchester this past Saturday afternoon. Despite 9 accepted penalties totaling almost 100 yard and numerous other mental lapses, the visitor’s did make strides in their overall play.
The warm, almost summer-like afternoon was the backdrop for this contest—the 2nd meeting between these two squads in 3 weeks (the Intensity won the first game, 14-7, in Medway, Massachusetts). With a decade worth of spirited rivalry and quite a bit of good old-fashioned trash talking, the atmosphere was that of a playoff game.
New England won the battle of field position during most of the first quarter. After Nikia Speed—seeing her first action of the season having been recently cleared to play since recovering from a partial Achilles tendon tear—pounced on a very short Freedom punt in the red zone that had bounced off a teammate and was “live”, Lisa Vincent punched in the game’s first score, a 14 yard run, as time expired in the opening frame.
Quarter #2 would belong to New England, as they scored three more TDs (a 13 yard pass from Rebecca Lopez to Tricia Donovan, a 60 yard pick-6 by Vincent, and a 5 yard TD pass from Lopez to Kim Boroyan), pushing the halftime margin to a comfortable 27-0. Head Coach John Johnson was concerned about a 3rd quarter let-down and emphasized the importance of putting this game away quickly . . .
No such luck, though, as the feisty home team displayed noteworthy gumption and fought their way back into the game, scoring in the 3rd quarter and early on in the 4th, cutting the Intensity lead to 27-14. Most of their damage done via the option (which New England had not much practiced defending) and some Special Teams troubles (blocked and short punts, in particular—though Riss Nardelli did uncork a 51 and a 45 yard punt during the game).
Order was restored in the fourth quarter, with Lopez connecting for a 2nd time with Donovan for a touchdown about halfway through the frame. The cherry on top was rookie running back Heather Eagleson slicing up the middle and exploding into the defensive backfield, outrunning the Freedom players en route to a 55 yard TD scamper—the first of her career (hopefully many more to come). Also of note was Brenna Leveille making two tough catches over the middle under extreme duress, one for a first down. She continues to lead the team in receiving yards, had a sack, two tackle assists and averaged over 36 yards per kickoff!
Offensively, the Blue would end the day with a fairly balanced 93 passing and 141 rushing yards (averaging almost 6 yards per carry). The O line had a very good effort, keeping the QB upright for the vast majority of her 27 pass attempts—Lopez was only sacked twice.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Intensity held the line fairly well, holding the Freedom to just 45 passing yards on 6 of 25 attempts. Cornerback Stacey DeLuca was a big part of this (4 passes defended and a career-high 2 interceptions). Fellow CB Andrea Covelli had 2 passes defended, as did Speed. Safety Donna Bruce had an interception and a pass defended and, as was previously-mentioned, Vincent had a 60 yard interception return for a touchdown.
The Blue was stout against the run, surrendering just 88 yards on the ground on 41 rushes—barely 2 yards per carry. The Linebackers had a big day—due, in large part to the D line doing a better job getting pressure and penetration (Coco Edwards, Bri Giarrusso, Torrance Brown, Aimee Gauvin, Maia Goodall, Erin Diette, Brenna Leveille and Lisa Close all had multiple tackle assists/tackles—Close even tallying a blocked punt from the edge). Charlene Casey led the team with 15 tackle assists while Kate Miechkowski had a team-leading 4 solo tackles and 6 assists. Erica Adams had 13 tackle assists and 1 solo tackle, Speed had 2 solo tackles 6 assists and 2 passes defended, and Vincent had 1 solo and 10 tackle assists.
Now 3-1 at the midpoint of the regular season, the Intensity looks to their next contest—versus the Northeastern Nitro this upcoming Saturday, 5/19/12, in Schenectady, NY—and the week of practice that will precede it, to continue their steady improvements. Head Coach Johnson and his staff will be making sure the team is as prepared as possible for this game.
