GIRL POWER!
PORTSMOUTH, RI - March 31, 2006. The New England Intensity is working in collaboration with Girl Scouts of Rhode Island (GSRI) to help kick off their annual community service project, Project Undercover. Project Undercover is a drive to collect new socks, underwear and diapers for children in need in Rhode Island.
This year, as an added incentive to collect donations, GSRI invited Girl Scouts from all over Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts to participate in sports clinics offered by The Intensity, a Professional Women's tackle football team, as well as several other athletic organizations. It is expected that 100 Girl Scouts will attend the kickoff event on April 1st at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. After paying the admission fee of one package of socks, diapers or underwear, the girls will start their day with a Project Undercover Pep Rally. They will then attend two, one-hour clinics of their choice. The girls were offered clinics in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, soccer, tennis, and ultimate Frisbee.
The Intensity is excited to teach the fundamentals of football to these Girl Scouts, ages 6-17 years old. "Many girls and young women are unaware of the athletic opportunities for them out there. And many do not know the rules of football because they do not know that women football organizations exist. We hope this clinic will help empower the girls to believe they are not limited because of their gender and to encourage them to "tackle" life's challenges head-on. We also think they will have plenty of fun." said Tricia Donovan, majority owner of the New England Intensity. In addition to running the football clinic, the team is also planning to donate packages of socks, diapers, and underwear to help the cause. "We want to be role models for these girls and young women and part of that starts with being a role model off the field. We want our community to first see us as a caring and nurturing organization," said Donovan.
The Project Undercover kickoff is sure to be a positive event for all of the girls and organizations involved. Not only will the girls learn a new sport or hone their skills in a familiar one, it may help the Girl Scouts collect a record-number of donations this year. The Intensity is honored to be a part of that effort. GSRI will be collecting Project Undercover items throughout the month of April.
